The value of educational entertainment when teaching robotics

Robotics has proven to be an effective medium to pique students' interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields. Throughout the past decade, over one half million Boe-Bot Robots have been deployed in classrooms around the world, ranging from primary school to university courses. We'll examine the learning styles of typical students in the U.S. and the methods used to teach normally complex robotics concepts in an easily comprehensible manner.

Robotics in Education & Education in Robotics: Shifting Focus from Technology to Pedagogy

In this work we highlight the role of learning theories either while using robotics in school education (Robotics in Education) or while training adults to use robotics for professional purposes (Education in Robotics). The successful introduction of an educational innovation, like robotics, is not just a matter of access to new technologies. As important as the technological advancements are in the development of robotics, the real fundamental issue from educational perspective is not the technology itself; it is the educational theory and the curriculum guiding the use of robotics in any educational context. The robot is just another tool, and it is the educational theory that will determine the learning impact coming from robotic applications. Alignment with theories of learning, proper educational philosophy, well designed curricula and a supportive learning environment are some of the important elements leading any educational innovation including robotics to success. So, the emphasis in this work is on shifting from technology towards partnership with education putting the emphasis on pedagogy than on technology and especially on pedagogical principles coming from sound learning theories, such as constructivism and constructionism. In this framework, constructivist methodologies for integrating robotics in school science education and in professional medical training are suggested. Exemplary projects from each case are reported to demonstrate the educational methodologies involving corresponding target groups: from teachers and students of lower secondary education using robotics to study informatics and physics concepts up to surgeons trained in robotic surgery through simulations of robotic tools.

The conference sessions will be held on Septebmer 13 and 14. On September 15, visit to the Robotour competition will be organized.
